Uhud is a mountain stretching just north of Medina. The Battle of Uhud against the Meccan polytheists was fought at its foot in the third year after the Hijra (625 CE). The mountain is not named in the Quran, but commentators link the long passage beginning at verse 121 of Al Imran to this battle.
3:121 describes the Prophet leaving his household early in the morning to station the believers in their battle positions. 3:152–153 depict the turmoil that followed when some Muslims disobeyed orders, and the retreat towards the mountain.
The graves of those killed in the battle, foremost among them Hamza, lie in the Uhud martyrs' cemetery at the foot of the mountain.
