Hunayn is a valley between Mecca and Ta'if. Shortly after the conquest of Mecca, in the eighth year after the Hijra (630 CE), the Muslims fought the tribes of Hawazin and Thaqif here. At-Tawbah 9:25 says that the Muslims, relying on their great numbers, at first scattered; 9:26 relates that they then won with the tranquillity (sakinah) and help sent down by Allah.
Hunayn is one of the few battle sites named in the Quran. However, the sources give differing accounts of the valley's exact location and its distance from Mecca; the marker shows an approximate position.
