Al-Hudaybiyah lies about 22 km west of Mecca on the old road to Jeddah; the area is known today as al-Shumaisi. In the sixth year after the Hijra (628 CE) the Muslims, who had set out to perform the Umrah, were stopped here, and the Treaty of Hudaybiyah was concluded with the Quraysh.
Al-Fath 48:18 states that Allah was pleased with the believers who pledged allegiance to the Prophet under the tree; this pledge is known as Bay'at al-Ridwan. Most commentators also connect the "clear victory" in the sura's first verse with this treaty, and 48:27 announces that the vision of entering al-Masjid al-Haram in safety would come true. The place itself is not named in the verses.
