Al-Furqan 25:38 and Qaf 50:12 mention "the Companions of the Rass" alongside 'Ad and Thamud among the destroyed peoples. In Arabic "rass" means an old well, or a well not lined with stone; the Quran gives no details about this community's identity or location.
Commentators report various views: according to one attributed to Qatadah, they lived at Falaj in the region of al-Yamamah; other reports link them to the Aras (al-Rass) River in Azerbaijan, to Antioch, or to Midian. A South Arabian tradition preserved by al-Hamdani places al-Rass between Ma'rib, Najran and Hadhramaut.
All locations on the map therefore show proposed views only; the main marker is placed at al-Aflaj (Falaj) in al-Yamamah.
