The Quran mentions the Tur (the Mount) in many verses: as "Tur Sinin" in at-Tin 95:2 and as "Tur Sayna'" in al-Mu'minun 23:20. It is where Allah called out to Moses (Maryam 19:52) and where a covenant was taken from the Children of Israel (al-Baqarah 2:63). Surat at-Tur takes its name from this mountain.
Traditionally Mount Sinai is identified with Jebel Musa ("Mount of Moses", about 2,285 m) in the south of the Sinai Peninsula; St Catherine's Monastery, founded in the 6th century, stands at its foot.
Some modern researchers have suggested instead that the mountain lay east of the Gulf of Aqaba, in the land of Midian, proposing for example Jabal al-Lawz; these views remain contested among scholars.
